WISE Network Talk “Empathy 2.0” by dr. Caroline Bollen followed by WISE Networking Drinks

We are very pleased to announce the WISE Network talk  “Empathy 2.0”  by Dr. Caroline Bollen.

Talk: What is empathy and how can it be researched? There are many different answers to this question, but most often, empathy is thought of as a certain emotion, experience or a capacity associated with specific behavior. It’s time to change that.

Caroline’s perspective on what it truly means to be empathic drastically changed by learning from those who are often considered to have an empathy-deficit: autistic people. She reflects on how biased narratives can shape and distort what is presented as “descriptive” and “objective” research. In response, she developed a notion of “Empathy 2.0”, an account of empathy that is rooted in virtue ethics. According to her, empathy is not something one just feels or has, it’s something that needs to be practiced, cultivated, and developed like a skill. Through this theoretical lens, she explores how technologies can be designed and implemented in ways that work towards, not against, a more empathetic future.

Next to sharing theory and examples from her research, she will perform some self-written songs to tell the story of Empathy 2.0.
