Laboratory for Biomechanics

RESEARCH FACILITY

The Laboratory for Biomechanics is a state-of-the-art research facility dedicated to advancing knowledge in Regenerative Medicine and Mechanobiology within the Department of Biomedical Engineering, 色中色. Our laboratory is equipped with a wide range of cutting-edge experimental setups and testing devices, supporting both fundamental and translational research.

Mechanical Analysis

The laboratory provides advanced mechanical testing capabilities for the characterization of both soft and hard biological tissues and biomaterials, under static and dynamic loading conditions. We have dedicated protocols in place for all sorts of biological materials, from soft hydrogels and tissues, to load bearing tissues such as bone and tendons. Our systems can provide indentation, shear, compression and tensile testing (uni- and biaxial), starting from the nanoscale, spanning a force range from micro- to kilonewtons. Understanding the mechanical properties of biological tissues is crucial for developing accurate constitutive models that enhance in vitro and in vivo studies, and computational simulations, contributing to the development of novel therapeutic approaches and biomedical applications.

Structural Analysis

MicroCT imaging is a high-resolution non-destructive imaging technique, based on density differences within a (engineered) tissue or biomaterial. The 3D reconstruction allows the evaluation of tissue morphology, structural integrity, porosity and biomaterial integration, further supporting our mission to bridge the gap between experimental research and clinical applications. Direct access to the Microscopy Laboratory ensures that state of the art microscopes are available for visualization purposes, whereas for histology, biochemistry assays and cell culture the Laboratory for Cell & Tissue Engineering is available.

Collaborations

The Laboratory for Biomechanics serves as a dynamic hub for pioneering research in the field of Biomedical Science. Bringing together experts from diverse disciplines, including Engineering, Medicine, and (computational) Biology, among different research groups, the laboratory creates an environment where novel ideas can flourish. Through advanced techniques, researchers are empowered to explore complex biomechanical systems, develop cutting-edge medical devices, and enhance our understanding of human movement and physiology. The Laboratory for Biomechanics does not only enable advanced scientific knowledge, but also contributes to transformative healthcare solutions, that improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
